Scratch Film Junkies

thank God i took Shanon's experimental class last semester so i was somewhat prepared for this film. the beginning was a little slow. it took me a few minutes to find the "rhythm" but once the sound turned into more of a beat, I started to enjoy the images more. i love experimental films but this was the first one ive seen that is all made by doing things directly on the film. the scratches and coloring on the images was beautiful. i especially loved the parts with the people in the background and the paint laying all over them. the boy behind the fence was awesome the way the scratches and paint hide him yet you could clearly see what was going on. after we watched it i tried to use some of the things i saw in the film when scracting on my film.
the painting over the images was beautiful. the colors were so vibrant and really gave a simple film strip a completly different story. i feel like if those original images were placed with that music it would be a mess but the paint on top of the film gave a new story. it was rushed in some places when the beat would pick up and then slowed down when the sound faded. gave me an anxious feeling at times when all the colors were flashing so rapidly while the beat was at its strongest point. and i noticed a more calm feeling with the flashing colors slowed and the film was more image focused like the boy behind the fence....even though there was color there it wasnt so in your face.
ok i said the film started slow but now that ive said all that i guess it was just building up for the actual pace of the film. if it just went straight into that face paced flashing colors, it would have been a bit much....i feel like i would have gotten tired of it after a while. the variation of images kept it interesting...i dont think there was one frame with the same image, whether it was paint or scratches on it, nothing was the same. overall i liked the film, i think its very original and definitely something i would love to learn how to do.
